Mobius UAV

Cosworth high performance electronics provided mission critical health monitoring and navigation data for the Mobius - a UAV capable of autonomous take off and landing developed in partnership with Berkut Engineering & Design Inc.

The challenge

To provide payload control, telemetry and data acquisition systems suitable for an unmanned aerial vehicle capable of speeds in excess of 250mph and a flight duration of 20 hours.

The solution

The various systems employed for the project were based around Cosworth's range of "off-the-shelf" data acquisition, instrumentation and control products.

The lightweight, compact designs enabled them to be easily installed in the airframe and the rigorous enclosure designs meant that the systems were able to withstand the environments encountered on Mobius.

Cosworth provided a set of systems that delivered a number of mission-critical functions for Mobius, monitoring the status and health of both the vehicle and its payload. The data acquisition system provided GPS and gyroscopic data that were employed to confirm the vehicle's position and course, ensuring correct operation of the command and control suite developed by L-3 Communications.

The onboard systems from Cosworth also handled fuel management, an essential component of a successful mission. Fuel consumption, remaining fuel load and fuel tank switching were all calculated and either transmitted to the command suite or input to Mobius' autonomous operational parameters.
