Nissan VK45 Supercharger
Cosworth designed, developed and validated a supercharger system to sit within the V formed by the engine cylinder configuration. The critical element was the requirement for the top of the supercharger to be no higher than the original normally aspirated variant of the engine. The completed design incorporated an off the shelf rotor pack to remain viable on costs and Cosworth also set up the entire supply chain to deliver volume product.
Although superchargers are somewhat unpopular at the moment they provide a good alternative to turbocharging and are likely to find a permanent place in the design of future highly efficient powertrains. New pedestrian impact regulations will make it difficult to increase engine height thus requiring the type of compact design that Cosworth can provide. This solution could provide an alternative to larger engines for performance enhancement; effectively downsizing.
